team hectic nanoweight build.
hey guys. looks like as well as the ant spinner, i'm also going to be building a nanoweight after crimbo. so i thought i'd set up a build diary thread for it. i'm considering a few ideas for nanos but i reckon for my first one it'll just be a two wheel drive pusher. my design ideas for future nanos include a grabby thing, a walker and a flipper but those will have to wait. i think the name for this one will be “ this too shall fail ” will post again when i have anything further to report.

Re: team hectic nanoweight build.
built the chasis today. it's 4cm squared so theres plenty of room for the wheels and for acetate. it's a mini version of transit ant. looks like it's going to be called “ this too shall fail ” here are some pictures...

Re: team hectic nanoweight build.
If you haven't already got one you're gonna need a 1 cell battery for it.
I recommend one of these, though you'll need some way of charging it...: http://www.hobbyking.co.uk/hobbyking/st ... duct=37550

Re: team hectic nanoweight build.
I wire servo connectors to the battery and then charge mine through that. Had to make a special connector for the charger as well so I could connect it to the servo connector. How's your soldering?

Re: team hectic nanoweight build.
It'd be a good skill to get the hang of, especially if you're doing Nanos.
As long as you have a half decent soldering iron with a good, fairly fine chisel tip then it's very easy (if the tip is old and corroded then it'll be a nightmare). Also, some 0.7/0.5mm diameter 60/40 lead/tin solder is much easier to use than the unleaded stuff (though just be careful to wash your hands afterwards; lead's not good for you).
A lot of the electronics in a Nano depend on the robot, so some soldering will nearly always be required, plus you'll need to do a little on your spinner, so would be useful to get the hang of it.

Re: team hectic nanoweight build.
i plan on using these servo gears for wheels. i had to cut the long motor input shafts off and decrease the width from the other side as well. i havn't measured them yet but they should be big enough to allow the robot to run inverted. i think i'll probably just end up hot gluing them to the nano servos and hoping for the best.

Rory, you are awesome!
don't worry about spoilers by the way, i know what my main presents are: about £100 worth of robot gear, not that i'm spoilt or anything
