The shockbots kit is in a different league to hacked servos. You should be able to be very competitive with one. Or with any other gear motor and esc based system.

Absolutely agree!

The Shockbots kit is very good value when you look at what you actually get for your money. Which kit did you go for; the flipper or crusher?

flipper coz It seems to be the most predominant type of robot and I thought it would be the easiest to get started with

Sounds awesome! Make sure you get a nice sheet of acetate (really thin, light, clear plastic that is often on the front of robots) and cut and stick a piece to the flipper so you can get in underneath other robots. The main issue I had with my first flipper (apart from dive issues and radio interference or voltage dips) was not having a very good piece of acetate on the front. Without it, you simply won't be able to get underneath anything to flip them and (even worse) you would get pushed around the arena quite a lot!

I must say that those kits perform very well in competition (Will runs a couple in his team) so I am frankly terrified about seeing more of them around!

Wow I feel like a lucky person now!
I have too many ideas so I guess I need to take everything one step at a time and stop thinking about competitions or modifications until its arrived and assembled and I have learnt how to drive.

With respect to Will, I hope we don't see TOO many kit robots, great starting point but we need variety (we have a fair bit, but still)

I doubt that many people will stick to their standard kit robots. I reckon we will be seeing lots of new linkages, added servos and moreadded to the kit robots. Then people will gain the confidence to build robots to thier own designs, maybe using those components. I think they will be more of a starting point for the newcomers and then we will see expansion into more unique designs.

I know that my first designs were appalling and therefore very irritating. If I hadn't been so set on the hobby, there may have been a chance that I would not have come back with anything original like I do now. At least these kits motivate by being well made and generally excellent.

That's pretty clear then.I guess I must have to use the 30g spare wisely so I am not just takin part as a clone of team shock.

If you simply added a servo for a claw on the flipper you would potentially have a robot like the successful Chomp (1st at AWS 43) and that would be very unique. SG90 servos only weigh 9g so you could easily add one on the front; they just plug straight into the receiver.

How hard would it be to put the flipper the other way up like on the heavy weight firestorm?
From watching the World Series on YouTube I sort of have an idea what other people's look like and I have only seen 3 people do something similar to what I want to do
