Brighton Mini Maker Faire 8th September 2012

Post by BeligerAnt »

I have applied for a stand at the Brighton Mini Maker Faire, to be held at the Corn Exchange in the centre of Brighton on Saturday 8th September.
Applications will be sorted in June/July so more info then. The organisers saw us at Modelworld and asked us to apply, so I am hopeful.

We will be (officially) limited to 3 people on the stand, but since admission is free I don't think there will be too much problem with more people turning up - especially if we take it in turns to actually man the stand.

Let me know if you are available to help out.

I'm up for this, although 3 people isn't many. :-?

I'm sure we can (will have to...) squeeze a few more people (and robots!) in over the course of the day. I understand why they need to limit exhibitors, but I hope we can get away with shifts of three (different) people throughout the day - mostly so we can have more than three people's-worth of robots on display.

Count me in Gary - I am clear that weekend. They (organisers ) were certainly keen for us to come when we spoke to them at Modelworld.

Received the following from the organisers of the Mini Maker Faire:
Dear Maker,

We are really happy to inform you that your application for Brighton Mini Maker Faire 2012 has been accepted. We’re very excited about the event, and we’re looking forward to you being part of it.

We’ll be sending more information out over the next few weeks, but we’d like to give you some essential information now.

*Summary Information*

* You need to fill out and return (to makerhelp@makerfairebrighton.com) the attached Maker Agreement and Risk Assessment, by 20th July. Please fill out the abstract and detail of your exhibit with a view to them being read by the general public on our website.
* Any questions/concerns? Check out http://makerfairebrighton.com/makers/faq, or email makerhelp@makerfairebrighton.com
* Public event is 8th Sept, 10am to 5pm
* You can set up the night before, from 8pm to 11pm, or on the day from 9am.
* We have some funding for providing maker grants, details below.

*Dates and times and venue*
Brighton Mini Maker Faire is Saturday 8th September - 10am to 5pm - at the Brighton Dome and Corn Exchange:

http://goo.gl/maps/mvZu

If you're not familiar with the space, have a look at some photos we've taken here: http://flic.kr/s/aHsjAks9yu

For those of you who took part last year - it's the same venue, but with much more space included. The Corn Exchange is a massive addition, and we also now have a usable outside area.

*What next*

1. Please fill in the attached Maker agreement and risk assessment forms, and return them to makerhelp@makerfairebrighton.com by 20 July. When we receive them, we will confirm your place at Brighton Mini Maker Faire.

2. Apply for a maker grant, details here: http://www.makerfairebrighton.com/makers/grants

3. In the coming weeks, we will send you further information about the venue, load-in, parking, etc.

*FAQ*

We'll try to answer as many questions as possible on our FAQ page:

http://makerfairebrighton.com/makers/faq

but if there are any other questions you have, send them to 'makerhelp@makerfairebrighton.com'

*MakerCamp and accommodation*

We will be hosting a tandem 'MakerCamp' at the BuildBrighton Hackspace, from the Friday evening to the Sunday afternoon. If you are interested in this, please holler to makerhelp@makerfairebrighton.com and we'll forward details. Space is limited, so do this quickly.

There is plenty of accommodation in Brighton, close to the venue. We recommend the use of http://booking.com to find good deals. £70-£100 per night is common.

*Saturday Evening "After Party" event*

Details are still TBC, as we have a couple of venue choices available to us, but there will likely be an after show party, which of course you are invited to. Bring your dancing shoes! We'll forward more details as we know them.

*Media/interviews*

There will be several opportunities to be included in our media outreach over the coming weeks. We'll be in touch with more details as we know them.

*Insurance*

Please note that your are responsible for securing any insurance you may need to protect yourself in the event of anything bad happening. The event and venue insurance policies will not cover you.

If you do not have any Public Liability Insurance of your own, we can likely help you find some economically. Please get in touch via makerhelp@makerfairebrighton.com

*Spread the news!*

We’ve created some Maker Faire graphics that you can use on your website, blog or social network to let people know about your appearance. You can also find us on Twitter and Facebook; please do, and spread the word. We appreciate any efforts on your part to promote Brighton Mini Maker Faire to friends, family, and coworkers.
You will find these graphics and links to Facebook etc. at http://www.makerfairebrighton.com/assets

*Stay up-to-date*

We'll be setting up a mailing list that will allow you all to communicate with each other, details soon.

For now though:

* if you have any questions send them to makerhelp@makerfairebrighton.com
* Join the Facebook: http://www.facebook.com/BrightonMakerFaire?sk=wall
* Follow us on Twitter: http://twitter.com/MakerFaireBTN

Thanks again for your interest and application. We’re all very much looking forward to seeing you at Brighton Mini Maker Faire!
More info as I receive it...

For now I have a 50-100 word abstract and a 100-500 word description to write, and a risk assessment to fill in!

Yay! Risk assessments! Have to say they didn't seem like RA type people when we met them :-)

Still. Quick response....should be interesting!

Help request chaps!

We need a photo to go on the Maker Faire website.
It needs to have great visual impact and unequivocally say "Antweights are cool!" :)
So far this is the best James and I have found from a rummage through our pictures:
Image

If you know of anything better, please post a link here. I don't actually need the picture, just a link to it for the Maker Faire site.

Also, anyone willing to provide robots and/or manpower for the day will be much appreciated. We could do with a good variety of robots for static display, plus enough robots for the public to drive "all day".
With 5000+ (geeky) visitors expected it will be a very busy day. Even if you can't make it all day, your help (and robots) would be much appreciated!
