Yes, it expands once its in the arena, but it doesn't have to expand upon activate. Robots like Odyssey, Anteater, Hinge, all utilised this rule. You put the robot in the arena, unfold it via remote control, and then there is "3-2-1 activate" and the fight begins. That's how its always been.
I'll upload a video showing how it expands under remote control.

Actually thats not how it has always been I can remember Anteater unfolding on activate in the early days but it did get dropped.
The whole point is that when the robot is placed in the arena it is in a condition that it fits the cube and the weight limit including your stick or whatever.
You could also argue that as expansion is a way of improving your robots fighting ability it is a weapon and weapons are not allowed to detach from the robot.
Dave you and I are never going to agree on the rules I always want to stick to both the letter and the spirit and you always want to find ways of getting round them.

The stick can be included in the weight limit if you wish, I have no issues with that. I could also attach it to the robot with a bit of thread or something if you want it to stay attached, but I don't really see this as against any rules, so don't really see why I should.
I'm also happy to start folded up if the rules are changed so that it specifically says this, but it currently doesnt, and as you say Peter, was dropped ages ago, so I shall be ok for this event.
I don't really see why its "against the spirit" either. Against the spirit to what? Build a robot that might win a fight? It's a simple solution to a rule, but that doesn't mean its any less worthy or spiritless.

Did you watch the video? Do you still object?

I hadn't seen the video but have now and if you use that method I am quite happy as it stands.
I think attaching it by a bit of thread is likely to cause more problems with entaglement than it solves.
It was the
The front scoop is on an elastic band, which acts as its method of expansion
that I was concerned about.

Ah, no, ok, if it just flopped back out from elasticity of the band, then yes, I would have said it wasn't allowed. But with my ingeniously simple method of remote controlled expansion, I think I've cracked it (in a terribly simple way).
It's a bit like Typhoon Twins on Robot Wars. There was a rule stating that "all parts of a clusterbot must enter the arena as one machine and then they can split". So the Typhoon guys just attached their robots together with string, and they just pulled apart when the battle started. Simple, but it worked.

Dave, don't ever change :) Robots are epic, although I reckon Meat 5 was better looking than Meat 6.

Pete: name suggestion: ElegAnt, simply because it looks very cool with the curved top.

I'll post a pic of Little Devil when its back from Josh.

Aww, Meat 6 is a baby Anger :)
Should call it Temper Tantrum, considering that's what we all had when we were babies!

And also, in your expansion vid, it sounds like the person talking on your TV/radio/whatever-entertainment-device-is-operating is Weston
