Silicon reinforced? Do tell us what that means as it sounds interesting :)

It doesn't actually have that any more Alastair, I found out after messing with the stick endpoints a bit I could increase the maximum travel slightly, and that means it self rights properly and without ears now :P it does it rather violently too, shaking bolts loose all over the place...

To tell the truth I'm noy actually sure. I've just done work experience in university of sussex and I managed to aquire quite a large amount of offcuts from the workshop there. He said it was mostly aluminium but not pure because it was partly silicon that made it stiffer. I can only see it as a good thing. :)

Antipathy's blades went straight through the 1mm aluminium on Damage Bot at Modelworld today.

However, in my experience it's not so much the material rather than the shape which governs how well armour performs. And, if the armour withstands a prolonged onslaught from the likes of Katjuscha (Kevlar RONNY) then the insides just get shaken to pieces!

Commercial alloys include all sorts of interesting metals to improve their characterisics in one way or another. Silicon is commonly added to steel. Aluminium alloys usually contain some magnesium amongst other things. I'm not enough of a chemist to explain it any further I'm afraid.

...that's mainly because Fred is a rat :P a domesticated fancy one with a slight penchant for wires.

1mm aluminium sounds worrying as that's what Jigsaw's front's made of...eek...will have to lose some weight to get the anti-spinner plate on the rear methinks.

Having had a bit of a chat about blade balancing with James at Brighton I decided to have another look at the new titanium blade on Anticyclone which as I mentioned was not as well balanced as the original. I checked the blade and the collar that mounts it to the motor and they seemed OK but I found that the blade was a fraction off center when mounted on the collar. I machined up a plastic jig that just fitted the collar with a reduced diameter on the end that just fitted the hole in the blade so they were held in alignment while I drilled new blade mounting holes in the collar. This has resulted in a much better balanced blade and the robot sits stationary even with the blade at full speed on 12.6v.
