i am aiming to get a fleaweight walker into the arena at some point. the idea is to use my mechanism design for the old ant walker project but on a slightly smaller scale. i'm hoping i'll have enough weight left to add an antweight sized servo running at full voltage with an axe on the end. could be quite effective if i can make it work.

Ah cheers Dave. Any idea which is stiffer? or are they both just mild steel?

Garden wire comes in different grades. Some of it is too flexible but the thinner grade stuff I made a robot out of before would've been great for it. And I know piano wire is the stuff Peter uses for 'spindly bits' like the mechanism on Tarantula so that should be good.

I build this abomination out of garden wire:

I put together a prototype for the Nano kits today... Not sure I'm hugely happy with it though. It's using a V-Tail mixer and two servo boards as the controller, all bound up with a Lemon Rx. I mean it works fine, but was very fiddly to make in comparison to the servo drive setups, and more concerningly, it's quite bulky and weighs about 15g with a switch and 50mAh battery (not included).

I could go back to the first-gen hacked servos as used in shark bait or this too shall fail, which are very light but quite slow, or carry on with this setup which is heavier but has the powerful drive units... I don't really want to keep stock for both types.. What do you guys think?

Does it NEED a switch?

I like the little servo things. Shark Bait runs well enough, even though it is slow.

Well the batteries usually have to be hardwired in as there's no connectors on this scale, so switches are kind of a must (unless your Will and use oddly hacked connector things :L) The switch is pretty tiny so doesn't make up a significant amount of the 15g. I could always do the speed hacked servos that I did for Will's Nanos, though speed hacking is never hugely reliable..

One of the main sticking points with this is that a lot of people need onboard mixing, but it's a pain to add as mixers are comparatively expensive and bulky; I had to hacksaw about 5mm of the end of the mixer used in the prototype above so it would fit across the Lemon. I'm looking into building a dedicated Nano esc that would be single cell only, which would have on board mixing built in... that version of the kit probably won't be a thing for a while though...

I'll have another go with the current version when the bulk load of servo boards arrive...

i don't really mind that much. the little drive units would be good as they're faster but my current nano uses the modified servos and is fine with them if a little slow.

Put together a little 8g cluster bot.. This is more of a fall back plan incase I end up with 4 rollers in my ant team and need to make one a cluster, and/ or if I can't get a working Nanoweight walker. If I'm feeling inventive enough to solve those problems properly then this thing won't make an appearance at the AWS, but it's nice to have just in case :P

that's well cool! :) are those the same wheels that the kits will come with?

EDIT: new idea: fleaweight lemmings!

It's just the front wheels and electronics from the original Minidozer; the kits are hopefully going to have 3D printed wheels.

Could enter 3 of these as a kinda Nanoweight lemmings :L
