If you wanted to do a vertical claw (Ala Mantis/Razer), you can attached the claw directly to the servo, however I would recommend a metal gear servo if you're going to do that.

I was going to make the jaws like joey described, but I can't for work out how to pull/push the rod!

Here is an example of how I did it on Antrax.

I found that the very small servo got rather warm and eventually burnt out.
I replaced it with a larger servo a Tower Pro MG90S and made the link to the arms curved so rather than stall the servo when it gripped the other robot the amount of spring in the link allowed the servo to travel to the end.

On a previous version I bolted two plastic gears to the arms rather than machineing all the teeth into the arms.
