RobotWars101
Survey results... ![]() We have been carrying out a survey of robotwars101
for approximately 18 months now. The response has been very good and we've
decided to publish the results:
Q1 - It's interesting to note that the biggest feed is actually the various magazine articles that have been written about the site, closely followed by the RW (now FRA) forum and 'other' sources - mostly search engines such as Google, Yahoo and Jeeves.
Q2 - The antweight section is the most visited part of the site, which isn't surprising given the psuedonyms for robotwars101.org of antweights.com / antweights.co.uk / antweightworldseries.com.
Q3 - The favorite section again is the ant section, closely followed by the forum. In practise the forum gets more visitors, but most of these are repeat visits by the same people. No other sections really figure, although the Shop and Superheavyweight sections are popular.
Q4 - The least favorite is perhaps the most interesting area. The Toys and Superheavys are least popular. The toys section is very difficult to manage and we will probably lose it all together. The Super's need updating. They are very popular in the US but not in Europe where there are very few. The sports section is also difficult to maintain as the technology and circles involved are very different to those for combative robots. The two surprises here are the forum and Hot PAnts parts of the site. The forum is generally the most used section, so I was surprised that so many visitors don't seem to even visit it or use it. The Hot Pants / Big Pants site is the newest of our own robots so I would be very interested to know what people don't like about it. Any feedback welcome to the usual email address or on the forum.
Q5 - The vast majority of the users of the site use it daily. Most of these seem to use the forum so there is an obvious link there. A large portion of users are either here for there first time or occasional visitors. We need to try to provide more things to try to encourage these users to come back and use the site again.
Q6 - In the engineering section, the radio control is the most visited section - unsurprising as this has the antweight servo conversion pages in. Electronics comes second, so we need to find more information to put in here. The weapons section is sadly lacking at the moment but is obviously a popular facility so we will need to do some work there.
Q7 - We asked if people would like to be able to use a registration system to allow personalisation to the site. This is a fairly tricky thing to do backwards to a site, so I didn't want to work on the code if no one wanted to use it. Clearly there is a demand, so time for some coding!!
Q8 - We also asked if people would like an events service. This would allow automatic creation of a hosting site, emailing lists, electronic entry forms and results service. This is something we can really do, so we now have a mandate to do it. Q9 - We asked people who they would like to see interviewed. The majority answers were Razor, Tornado, Peter Waller and any of the antweights. We'll see what we can do. There is an interview with Peter, Craig and Oliver in the articles section. Q10 - Other comments we were given included suggstions on how to improve the site plus feedback on the fact that some parts of the site are in disrepair. We understand how frustrating this can be, so we will be looking to improve the site generally as part of the ongoing work. It is important to stress that this site has grown from a few pages on a free host to a site that gets over 50,000 hits per year in 5 years. It was never designed to be so diverse - in fact the engineering was on another site originally, and there was no forum. The site now needs some redesign. |
