Hi Everyone! First Antweight Advice.

Post by Rocketeer13 »

Hi Everyone!
So as you may have guessed from the title, I've decided to build my first proper robot. It will be a flipper while I get confident, but hopefully a future bot will be a bit more creative with! :P

My shopping list for parts at the moment is this:
https://hobbyking.com/en_us/hobby-king- ... ode-2.html (Reciever is 13g)
http://www.robotshop.com/uk/9g-continuo ... servo.html (9g x 2)
http://www.robotshop.com/uk/25kg-goteck ... servo.html (14.7g)

So what do you all think? Can you offer me any advice? Alex Shakespeare made a few suggestions on facebook:
'One tip is to actually avoid a flat to the ground flipper blade like you show there. It works well in other weight classes but actually makes it harder to get under stuff in ants. Aim for a slope of 30 ish degrees and stick acetate on like in the photo, you should just be able to see thin flexible plastic right on the tip of the wedge.'
Would you agree with him? I'm open to any suggestions!! :)
Thanks, Oliver.

Hi Oliver and welcome to the forum.
The components you have chosen would probably work but the robot is unlikely to be very competitive.
Servo drive robots tend to be slow and ponderous you would do much better with the speed controller and geared motors Rory supplies and would save weight and space.
I would also recommend getting a DSM2 compatible transmitter which you would need to work with it.
If you do stick with servos you would either need to go with nicad battery to limit the battery voltage to 6v or add a regulator as the servos won't take a 2 cell lipo.
I hope this is of help.

OK, thanks for this!! I chose servos mainly because it would be cheaper to do to start out, but you raise a good point. I've heard it's possible to remove some of the gears to make it faster (Obviously at the cost of some torque), but depending on how much I end up wanting to spend, Rory's kit might be a good way to go.
I'm not sure about DSM2 compatibility, but the Hobby King is apparently a decent budget alternative, though I understand why the further investment would be beneficial. And I definitely need to keep batteries in mind!
Thanks for your help.
