There are 2 types of SLA battery.Simon Windisch wrote:I used an SLA from a fire alarm system. It was rubbish. Stick with NiMh or NiCd at the least.
Simon
The ones for fire alarms are designed to be float charged for 99% of the time, and only need to provide a moderate amount of current when they are finally called into service (usually when the fire has destroyed the mains power into the building )
Then there are the high current types (think car battery) which are designed to provide huge currents (200A to crank a cold diesel engine ) for a short period of time, then get recharged slowly, discharged again, recharged, etc
Add to this the fact that all batteries have a finite lifetime, and ex-fire alarm batteries are thrown away because they have (almost) reached the end of their useful life, and you have the answer to why an ex-fire alarm SLA is no good for powering a featherweight robot.
SLAs have their place in the battery world, but these days NiMH or Li-ion can provide a better energy density.

I remember that fight, the arena flipper got my link right at the end. it was a good fight though i'll have to try harder this time round
Whirlpool EVO looks almost identical to the old one just with a new chassis (the old one had suffered as a result of over 2 years of service and almost 90 fights in total) the upgrades inside give around a 1/3 more speed and even more pushing power. And of course it wouldn't be whirlpool without plenty of blue LEDs
