AWS 40

Post by teamocean »

AWS 40- A milestone event for antweights and we are planning to make it a good one!

The event is being aided by the School of Systems Engineering at the University of Reading who have offered to cover the building hire and are working on some prizes to go with our usual awards.

Here is the info:

Date: Saturday 23rd March 2013

Venue: The Palmer Building
University of Reading
Whiteknights Campus
Reading
Berkshire
RG6 6UR

The building is no. 26 on this map (sqaure C5) the best gate to use will be the Shinfield road entrance with parking in Car Park 4 (may change)

SSE have booked the entire ground floor of the building meaning that we will have 3 large classrooms for the pits (with the joining walls removed) as well as access to the 400 seat lecture theatre for the arenas to be setup in along with a video feed to the projector. We aim to have a small audience of senior figures from the university to watch the event and are hoping to have Professor Kevin Warwick along to present the prizes at the end of the day.

Competitor sign up is at:

A list of those who have signed up is at:
http://robotwars101.org/ants/antweightw ... php?id=225

As for the day itself the current plan is as follows:

09:00 - 10:00 Arena and building setup
10:30 - 11:00 Registration and Tech Checks
11:00 - 12:30 Non-Spinner Tourament and FWS
12:30 - 13:00 Lunch and compeition draw
13:00 - 16:30 Antweight World Series
16:30 - 17:30 Fun fights, Annihilator, tag team etc.
17:30 - 18:00 Awards
18:00 - 18:30 Clean Up and Pack Away

Since the School of Systems Engineering want to have a good display of robots, any Micromouse, mini sumo or similar robots are encouraged to attend and we will try to arrange either a demonstration session or a small competition depending on numbers.

The usual rules will apply regarding entering the non spinner (1 entry per team) and either choosing to enter the FWS or non spinner so that we are not waiting for people as both events will be run simultaneously.

With any luck we will be running a live stream of the event based on the success of Scotts stream at AWS 39 with the stream being projected in both the main theatre, pits as well as online.

Other info:

Teams are encouraged to bring their own food and drink. The campus shop (a 2 minute walk from the venue) will be open which should be able to cater for anyone's needs, failing that there is a good chance that the student union bar will be serving food in the afternoon.

Any questions please do not hesitate to ask!

I have a meeting set for monday to sort out the use of the university for the AWS. It seems that the School of Systems Engineering are very interested in helping in any way they can which is great news for us.

Hehe, I should actually have antweights to compete at this one. :P Haven't had a working ant since I let Stanley go up against a spinner to destruction at Aylesbury.

I assume Registration & Tech Checks should be 10.00 - 11.00 (not 10.30). Half an hour isn't enough! :)

Also, I would suggest moving the awards earlier. Many people have to travel a significant distance and are understandably keen to get home or have a train to catch.

Me and Gemma have booked flights and should see you all there! (Providing bringing ants through airport security isn't too much of a hassle...)

I will be there for sure - Megan may also come with either an upgraded Titanic or Iceberg...the follow up :-)

Not sure what I will bring yet.

Should be good...
