Entirely speculative question

Post by joey_picus »

What rules (if any) would govern a - entirely hypothetical - flying antweight? I vaguely recall one ruleset (possibly the main FRA one?) having a specific prohibition on exposed rotating aerofoils, but as far as I can see there is no such prohibition in the current antweight rules or indeed anything governing antweights that aren't bound to any particular plane (pun not intended!).

The "Mentorn" rules had the exposed airfoil rule, and the FRA took that over.

Also, what would be the advantage of a flying robot?

Absolutely none other than amusement for everybody :) maybe in the past you could have used a harpoon and I think one of the US Robot Wars competitions had a flying robot with a net suspended by balloons, but those days are probably gone now.

I have a micro quad copter, that fits in the 4"cube,and weighs 33g.It would make a good cluster partner, very difficult to get out of the arena! I think that the biggest problem,in an enclosed arena would be the airflow disruption. It would be very difficult to control in such a small enclosed space, the air inside would be moving around very unpredictably.I might bring it along to reading and try it out in the arena,as an experiment?? :)

As far as I'm aware, there is no rule banning flying antweights, providing they fit all the other rules. I think one would be almost entirely useless and very difficult to handle within the box, as Jim said. I would also say that if it touches the floor outside of the arena, then it would be out, regardless of whether it could take off again or not, as this would fit it in with the rules for all other antweights too. Apart from that, it could be an interesting/suitably daft expierment. I quite like the cluster idea!

What if it hit the ceiling or arena walls? would it be out then? If not, then could you have a spring loaded robot with a big suction pad on it that would attach itself to the ceiling and just wait out the fight, then,at the flick of a switch, drop back to the arena and move around normally!! Oooh,I like that idea! :D

I got mine from Kings lynn model shop, online, but they have sold out, like alot of other places.
I found one here...

They say they have them in stock, and at a good price,I have seen them for £10 more at alot of sites.
They are great fun, this one specifically is excellent.I suggest you read some reviews, and you will see that the X4 is a lot better than the "toys" that saturate the market at this time of year. Me being me,I have stripped mine down, lightened and changed the shape, and have sanded and primered it,getting ready to install one of these in it...

Then I can do this with it...

Here it is at the moment.Just going to give it a final sand, then going to spray it nice and bright,so I can find it when I crash it!

Cheers Jim.
