Beetle weights are, I believe, an American 3lb class.
Super-Ants follow standard antweight rules, but are 250g and must fit into a 6" cube. I don't know if there was ever a weight limit set for super-ant walkers.
Unfortunately super-ants have not been well supported. I think they would be a better starting point than ants, as you can use cheaper standard servos, standard receivers, and probably standard AA or AAA batteries.
Maybe we should start up super-ants as a restricted "entry level" class? Roaming Robots are talking about splitting feathers into two classes at their events ( loosely "budget" and "all out war" as far as I can see ) - maybe we could benefit from a similar thing with super-ants/ants?
Obviously it would require several of us to build a robot each, but maybe some people have all the bits lying around gathering dust anyway?
