Another newbie - does my parts list make sense?

Post by BadGas Bratley » Sat Nov 05, 2016 9:52 pm

Hey folks,

After probably about 3 years of wanting to do this I am finally going to try to build an antweight. Its a chance for me to learn a bit more about electronics than I currently do and long term might be something I bring into my work as a teacher. Right now my aim is to simply create something which works and be able to take it to a contest without it conking out on me half way through.

I've seen a lot of people recommending kits but, for me, buying most of it pre-made would defeat the object of this being a learning exercise - I want to make some screwups for myself! I have tried to take in a few guides and work out a set of parts which I believe all works together. It may well end up being pretty much exactly what one kit or another would offer me, but I'm OK with that.

While I am OK with making mistakes, I'd rather not end up wasting money on the wrong set of stuff so I would be really grateful if somebody could cast an eye over the following list and let me know if I've made any fatal errors.

ESC
Nano Two LV

Drive motors
2x 6v 300rpm http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/DC3V-6V-12V-N ... IHSF1qN3VA
Also considering this alternative (the 50:1) purely because the site gives me better info on the specific specs. https://shop.pimoroni.com/products/micr ... back-shaft

Battery
2S 7.4V LiPo https://www.hobbyking.com/en_us/turnigy ... -pack.html

Receiver
Lemon RX 6 channel DSMX http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Lemon-RX-6-Ch ... 2684889928

Transmitter
4 channel 2.4ghz DSMX http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Blade-Heli-Co ... xyRhBSwIzG

I'm planning to weaponise it once I have a working drivetrain, likely a servo based lifter. I'm planning to build out of foamcore to start with because I love working with it, maybe upgrading to some kind of plastic later on.

Thanks in advance for any feedback and advice!

So they do! I assumed that was only if bought as part of the kit but clearly not.

When I have looked at the Lemon RX separately it has been DSMX but I see the version which is part of the NanoTwo is DSM2 - I assume this is still the case? The transmitter recommended in the document seems to have been discontinued and DSMX seems a lot easier to find at a reasonable price.

Unfortunately yes it is DSM2 only, however the DSMX transmitters blade transmitters do apparently work with DSM2 as well.

Though if you're spending £29 on a Blade TX, you might as well spend slightly more and get the much better value for money Devo 7E ( http://robotwars101.org/forum/viewtopic ... 87&p=56251 )

That actually looks super useful - long term I'm hoping to get 2 or 3 really basic bots together for the kids to use and being able to easily use a single transmitter for all of them would be amazing.

Thanks a bunch for all the help. You can expect an order email soon!
