Antweight first build diary

Post by Asht »

I've spent two weeks checking out everyone's awesome builds and decided to have a go I've ordered
2x 50:1 geared motors
Sabertooth speed controller
High speed servo
Lego wheels
1.5 mm aluminium for flipper/armour
1 mm polycarbonate for body
Just waiting for them all to arrive to start my build the picture shows my practice with polycarbonate and hopefully a model of my finished ant bot
Thankyou to everyone for the inspiration and any advice would be amazing

I am also a newbee, just ordered my first 'kit' to start a build.

I'm not sure if you plan to compete with the robot but i'm sure any metal armour can't be more than 1mm thick.

I'm sure more experienced roboteers will confirm this, but if you're just building for a hobby, it's looking good!

I didn't realise I have 1mm aluminium aswell so I'll use that if not. it's stupid addictive! Hopefully I will have something build by next weekend and in line with the rules so I can fight with it

The 1 mm thick metal armour rule was dropped sometime back you can use any thickness now.
For the full rules see:

Cheers for the reply I'll stick to the original plan. I was going to epoxy 50% of the body does this normally work OK in battle? The rest will be bolted

I use epoxy or hot glue most of the time, but bolting is generally superior

Epoxy can work but you'll probably want something on top of the polycarbonate to stop the chassis getting too damaged, obviously it'll be harder to repair onsite! I'd advise against aluminium from personal experience as it takes damage quite badly; titanium or thin steel is the way to go with metal.

As a heads up, superglue eats polycarb; makes for a strong joint initially but becomes weak after about a month. I'd advise folding it where possible as that's stronger, and if you need to glue it, use something like 5 minute araldite which is very strong and doesn't weaken over time.

Perfect thankyou will be folded glued then bolted ha I'm going to use the folds to give me 2mm while hopefully keeping the weight down. You guys are awesome thankyou for the advice and I will get a kit off you soon if that's ok once I'm ready for a spinner
