UserFriendly Build Diary

Postby UserFriendly » Thu Jul 21, 2016 12:21 pm

I've been into robots since I was bought a Radio Shack 'Armatron' by my parents when I was about 8. I still have it.

At school I was into RC Cars, and eventually went to Reading Uni to study Cybernetics. Robots wars - however small - seems to be my ideal hobby!

I first saw the Antweights back in 2014, when Gary (BeligerAnt) was doing a demo at Brighton Model World, about two weeks before AWS43. I couldn't make it to an event until AWS46, when I came with my wife, 3 kids, my best mate from school, who I'd press-ganged into making an Antweight! Working until 3am, I made something that fitted into this:

Image
(raided for components since!)

We also cam with another antweight called 'Doddle', made from a hot chocolate tin and an old helicopter board (there was no reverse!)

In total, we lost all but one fight, but had a blast.

Since then, one of my sons and I have bought a 3D printer (prusa), and love it. I've even done a demo at my sons school. I've spent far too much money.

So, one of my ideas is to have a side swiping action on a bot. Enter SlapDragon:

New robot: 'Exterminator'. Will (hopefully!) appear at AWS50

After my youngest son (7) helped to make 'FlyingScotsman' for his older brother to drive last time, he was really keen on making one for himself this time (with some help!) I started off a design on the iPad, and he modified and started to get the hang of using the app (we use 123D for iPad).

And here it is in ABS!:

Ooh nice, good to see some more attempts at geared drive! Though I'm concerned that it doesn't look like it is invertible or able to self right?

Hmm, when we thought of the design, I was thinking the flipper would double as a srimech, but having made it, you're right, we have a problem. I'm still thinking of armour, so we'll see if we can come up with something!

In my first attempt at a robot I had the same problem and my answer was to stick an enormous fin on the flipper. As such though, it doesnt entirely fit in the 4 inch cube, so maybe thats not such a good solution haha

looks pretty good. :)
Featherweight under construction.

Antweight to build list: 4Wd lifter, new clusterbot, secret project, walker of some description.

I love the overall aesthetic and design.

We had a delivery from Lakeland today. My youngest son imagined the box as an arena, and a few minutes later:

Not quite up to mr hibberd's standard (yet), but 3D printed an adapter so I can experiment with pneumatics!

Image

And here's a video of it working. It doesn't actually suck back in after firing as it appears to in the video - that's because I recorded it with the GIF like 'boomerang' app.

I would need to 3D print a different plunger to make it connect to a flipper.

New Robot: Triant

After my youngest came to me with some sketches of a new robot, I had to have a go at designing them.

He came up with this idea for a triangle with wheels, that could drive in any orientation, so I designed this:

Image

Unfortunately, after some disasters of 3D printing (mostly down to dodgy filament)

Image

Anyway, after upping the temperature, clearing an blocked nozzle, and some overnight prints, it exists:

And hopefully will appear tomorrow at AWS51

Has anyone successfully changed the pinion on these?

Image

I have attempted this before, but damaged the motor (I presumably bent the rotor shaft slightly, pushing it on)

If you have, how did you do it?

Looking forward to coming on the 1st July!

I've been working on this. A lot!

Image

I still need to wire it up and test the weapon. Might be good to have some armour  , but I need to lose 9g from somewhere!
