I think two pits would be fine. I'd even be happy with 2 curved pits, and then as Scott says some sort of triangle in the other corners to stop people hiding in them. Maybe even some other hazard like a spike ?

Not much progress today I am a bit stuck now until I get the Polycarb.
Drilling into the edge of the 6mm thick end plates with a 4mm drill needs to be fairly precise so I have come up with a jig.
Image
The two side plates are mounted on either side of two pieces of 6mm Polycarb with a 6mm steel bar in the middle that has been drilled 4mm to exactly fit the drill required.
This ensures that the drill is always parallel to the faces of the material being drilled.
The holes in the 2mm wrap around sheets will probably be drilled in situe as the spacing on the outer sheet will be slighty greater than the inner sheet.
I will probably need another small jig to ensure those holes are all an exact distance from the edge of the sheets.
The 6mm end plates have been dispatched today, as have the threaded inserts / screws, and the 2mm polycarb is on 2 - 7 working day delivery from last friday so I am hoping it will all arrive this week.
Fortunately Soapbox is finished and the laminate flooring will not arrive until after the AWS so that shouldn't hamper my progress.
I thought that when I retired I could just relax and do nothing all day still it beats getting bored.

On the other arena hazards front, as i've said before, pegs in the floor near the drop off were a great addition to my practice arena. One on the corner of the pits or something would make a big difference.. Just another possibility.

The polycarb end plates, threaded inserts and screws all arrived but no sign of the main cover sheets yet.
I drilled and fitted the threaded inserts in one end plate to check the jig worked OK.

Here is the end plate with an old sheet of 2mm polycarb fitted just to check it wrapped round OK.

Should improve visibilty as long as we don't get to many reflections from overhead lighting.

It could be a possibility.
I finally came to a decision for the first two configurations by putting 25mm wide 35 mm high pegs in each of the 8 places that the walls meet the pit.
Image
Then to accommodate these and because they effectively decrease the size of the pits I increased the curved edges the the full 250 mm size
Image
I had just completed that and the rest of the poycarb arrived and it looks a lot bigger than I was expecting.
Image
I have just managed to fit the first 2mm skin it was a bit of a struggle to say the least.
Image
Probably will not get much done at the weekend as my son is visiting and the there is the soapbox derby on Sundy

I want to play! Still think 2 pits will be enough though.
