thanks Rory. i think i'll do it your way with the motor mount and then i'll have to have a think about how i'm going to mount the blade to the motor. i'll use 2mm HDPE. that ought to be plenty strong enough. if i can make my spinner that light, i'll probably either encorporate my walker mechanism into the design or cluster it with my hexbug. i'm not sure how heavy the blade will be though. hopefully heavy so i can smash up stuff!

Hi all it's Vicki,

Thanks to everyone for helping Dan out with this new project, I will be over seeing this one, and will ensure Dan takes all necessary safety precautions, we already have a battle box suitable for testing ( adapting an upturned clear storage box). I'm sure i'm going to have a few more grey hairs before this one is finished!

we've ordered a six amp brushless ESC from hobbyking. would it be able to handle the motor Rory posted a link to on this thread without braking?

Depends on the make; Alex uses a 6A plush one on a ~10A motor and gets away with it... Also, on second glance that motor I posted the link to isn't ideal; it's actually quite a lot taller than I thought. http://cdn.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/stor ... duct=28166 on 2 cell should be better..

mum had a look at that one but according to the webpage it weighs 56 grams. is that right? i just thought it sounds a bit heavy for an individual component.

That's the shipping weight. The motor itself is 28g.

If the motor is an outrunner type (most are) then the case of the motor is actually the rotor (the bit that rotates) with the stator (the static bit) on the inside and connected to the mounting flange on one end. There is also an axle coming out of one (or both) ends connected to the rotor and usually used with a propellor attached, either directly or via a prop adapter.

If you have an outrunner, you can attach the blade to the body of the motor rather than the shaft. If the blade is thick enough (>=4mm) you can use a couple of grub screws to hold the blade to the motor case - just don't overtighten the screws so much that the case gets deformed, otherwise the motor won't rotate!

If you do use the axle to mount the blade, you will need to provide a mount at the non-motor end of it, otherwise the axle will probably break the first time the blade hits anything solid (as happened to Antipathy  )

If you are after a disc I've got one you can have, I can also print a mount to fit most outrunner motors

the motor we're using is the one in Rory's second link. how much would you want for a 3D printed blade mount Will?
