I'd offer a place to keep a communal arena but I already have 3 arenas/courses of my own :P

I've been trying to think of things to say in this discussion and Gary's said most of what I think XD I do have a few points though:

1) I would personally not be too bothered about any arena type other than a fully enclosed one with no drop off or low walls at all, in fact realistically I'd fight in any arena that wasn't actively attempting to kill me! (N.B. Jigsaw had great trouble getting robots out of Oliver's arena despite being a flipper - although it does open the 'wrong' way XD)
2) A communal arena is a good idea and I would be willing to help fund one if needs be. :)
3) Some variety in arenas is always a good thing - I would hate to see every competition held in the exact same arena with the exact same configuration. Something like Gary's arena with its changing wall setups would be a good idea methinks...

Well done all. Some interesting and valid points made.
I think a bit of variety in arenas could make things interesting. As a side effect, any variation on what we have now will inevitably favour one type of robot or another.I don't think we can get round that one.
But it would be interesting to see how different configurations affect results.
Vive la difference!(But within the rules! :) )

lol I came across this the other day.......I don't know why but I feel a little uneasy watching it. Maybe it's the flames, robots on umbilical cords and lack of any protective screens lol

Seemed the most relevant topic to post this in,

I've decided to sell my Arenas, They covers have been trimmed fit properly and I've replaced the plywood floor with a painted polycarbonate floor

I've got 2 of these and the stuff for another 4.

I'm looking for £50 each.

I'm moving away later this year and its either sell them or scrap them.

pm me if your interested or those who can, facebook me

Sorry to dig up an old thread but i felt the previous discussions are relevant.
Im almost finished building a Battlebox for locating at Swindon makerspace.
I have kept it to AWS specifications, and have built it well.

The question i had in the back of my mind has now resurfaced, and before i finish the polycarbonate sides, can i ask if this is a suitable arena. 2 of the battlebox sides are the walls of the box - with wood sides to the actual arena,

Also, im looking to build the roof 40cm from arena floor. would it be better to go 50cm? just thinking about cost for PC
see images.

this discussion mentions about having side walls to allow flipper bots to flip out over the walls edge. would people be happy in battling in this design:

Just so you know we haven't kept to the 50% drop off rule for a along time at AWS's now. Problem with a style of arena like you have drawn up is pushers become INCREDIBLY dominant as all they have to do is drive straight forwards no matter what direction they engage the opponent and will get them out. They just push someone along the wall and win. Short walls coming from the sides of the arena covering the dropoff for about 3-4" help this.
