Earthwormjim's Stuff

Post by earthwormjim » Thu Dec 22, 2011 10:42 pm

Hi .
Thought I'd start my own place to put stuff.
I have been a bit quiet lately, but hope to rectify that. :)

I have been putting together a robot, and have uploaded a couple of videos on youtube...
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2MvfE6n3 ... ature=plcp

It is way too quick, but should be fun! :D

It is to be a flipper, wierdly similar in shape to Craigs new flipper,Ixion!
But mine is a little bigger, and uses a completely different flipping mechanism.
This is the cad chassis design...

And I recieved the final article from shapeways this morning...

And here are a few pics of how it goes together so far...

There will be a 1mm carbon sheet on the top and bottom to provide the flipper surface.
The flipper mechanism uses 2 bearings which rotate around the motor hubs.
And there is also a switch and charge port incorporated into the rear of the chassis.
I have made a mistake in the diameter of the wheels, and need to get them remade to fit the tyres that I want,
but other than that, the printed parts fit really well. :)

Anyway,I thought it looked cool,so thought I would post it. :)
It is a way off being finished, but it looks pretty feasable, and might even be within weight too!

How did you make the cat robot, Jim? It's very lifelike!

That's...that's beyond words :) I really want to see these competing, it genuinely looks like something from Star Trek at this point. Fantastic work as ever Jim :)

That really is nice Jim.
I am working on a new Flippant but can't quite decide on fibreglass or 3D printing due to the forces involved.

Cheers chaps.
The chassis ranges from 2mm to 6mm in parts, and when braced, feels surprisingly strong. The 2mm curved parts feel rock solid, but 2mm flat parts flex a little.
Here is the controller I plan to use...

Image

It is a Baby Orangutan robot controller, with one of the mirco rx's piggybacked onto the controller.
Soldering was a S.O.B!! But I do like soldering. It is very therapeutic! :-?
The controller is loaded with the standard rc3pi software, which can be downloaded from the pololou website, and includes on board mixing, which all seems to work perfectly so far.
It is 30 x 18 x 10mm,and only weighs a coupkle of g's.
I have been testing it on this...

Image

And have tried it with 300,400,and 540 rpm gear motors, and although they are way too fast,I am going with the 540 rpm ones,as fast = cool,in my book. :D
