"I'm going to mould another double tomorrow and see what stanley gives."

Please don't! None of us will stand a chance then! :D

Have you thought about a split mould for the tyres.?
That way it should be alot easier to remove them
I started out with nothing and still have most of it left

What's that you say? I should definitely fit 4 of them to Stanley? Well alright:

The first batch of thin wheels. I'm reasonably happy but they are slightly too heavy for my liking 4g each and the tyres don't seem overly keen on staying on. So I'm going to try something different. Moulding the tyres not onto the hubs but something slightly smaller, then stretching them onto the hubs. I should also be able to use less silicone that way saving weight and cost. I'll like to get them down to 3g each. I know there is bubbling on one bit but that's my fault, I was far too energetic mixing the silicone. :P

More iterative design, this is generation 3 of the moulds about to be done (about 20 seconds after taking the photo!):

Stanley looks awesome with those chunky wheels! And is 4g per wheel too heavy? If so, I now know where all of my weight has been going! Out of curiosity, how heavy is one Pololu wheel in comparison?

One pololu wheel is about 2-2.5g of weight. And for the size of wheel 4g is acceptable but could ideally be a tad less. Just me silly overweight, the same reason these 1g hubs exist on my PC (real dear to make though):

Before I got my printer I was convinced Shakesc spent his time gluing depleted uranium into my bots. The weight just seemed to pile up from nothing! :P

EDIT: had wrong photo.

What kind of price are you looking at of you sell them?

I'm still not sure on that as I'm still trying to find my material costs. I'm on the last test as it were so I'll probably have figures tomorrow.

I had a new batch waiting for me when I got home which was easy to demould and holds onto the tyre well, I'm still going to test the stretch tyre method as I think it would be lighter. I managed to do some nice tests on the new wheels today and here are the results using Stanley as a test base since without acetate 100% of the robots weight sits on the wheels making it a good control. All setups were Stanley pushing into scales with my mousemat as a control surface (it's fairly smooth but textured enough to work and most importantly consistent). I made sure Stanley weighed 150g in each test.

Single pololu: 170g
Double pololu: 186g

Single moulded:267g
Double moulded:306g

As you can see the moulded wheels see a 60% increase in traction!

I also had a load of fights with Stanley versus Bullydozer, normally two very evenly matched robots but the moulded tyres heavily tipped the scales putting down enough power to ram bullydozer against a wall and over. All in all i think it was a great success! :D

I'll finish my last round of tests and get back to you on pricing.

Yeah, I've gradually managed to get BullyDozer to be good against Stanley; as Alex says, it was about 50:50. Now I'm pretty much back where I started

Just the amount of tests I've done on these tyres.

Image

Right I have 2 viable versions. One is 4g but easier to produce, the other is 3g much harder to produce but the tyres have better grip on the wheel (both have same grip to the floor).

I have some more testing to compare the 2 versions. hopefully I'll have a clear winner after.
