I've been thinking about developing a suction cup to counteract the flipper in the new pop so that as the flipper raised it drew air out of a cup with a seperate ram and sucked it to the floor before the flipper fully extended and threw the robot onto its back. although weight is an issue so will have to see how much weight i can save around the rest of the robot first.

What could you expect if you got the suction pad wrong? I'm assuming a slightly concave circular foam pad with a hole in the middle and strengthened with alu wouldn't cut it.

Surely all of the holes defeat the point of the vacuum?
http://durealeyes.com/hover.html If you read through the page you'll find about ceiling and wall robots.
For a combat robot you might want to try to make it more durable but the concept is there and it shows that it can be done using stuff that you may have lying around.
