the one thing I noticed at the last AWS was that the really grippy wheels seemed to collect a lot of dust.
I'm assuming that , like a lint roller, there is a danger of the stickyness going off because of this

like the wheels. Always had a soft spot for Lego wheels , well tyres at least - nice and grippy

Have you tried minimising the length of wire from the controller to the motors?

Also try twisting the wires (to give a twisted pair) and maybe suppression capacitors on the motors

I like the sound of fitting lego tyres to the aluminium hubs

Also found these wheels available in various diameters and shore rating
