There are very cheap Lipos about, Hobby king sell suitable ones with oistage for£5 if that. Postage being the most, and as you have a charger, then you are ready for many hours of running as apposed to 1 or 2 before buying a new 9v PP9 style.

Im currently building a 1.6mm high robot with a high power servo flipper for Antweight combat, so it can be done. What sort of gaps is the OP trying to get through? could you give us more details on the application? cavity wall or as a degree educational course project?

Not that i have used any,. but could the pit base be removable? so you could remove bots by just releasing the floor of the pit? I took off the motor controller chips and took one from the other side making it the lower powered version, still shall be adequate for my needs... Here are some images from the take apart, shows the lower chip seems to have suffered a heat failure, possibly due to the piggyback nature of the chips....
