ANTWEIGHT RULES 3.1

Revision History

Version Date of revision Modifier Explaination of changes
3.1 19/07/2005 Pete Collier / Oliver Steeples Rules 2q and 2r are combined and reworded to clarify the metal armour issues. 5i is removed as it was felt that this gave the wrong impression.
3.0 03/11/2003 Pete Collier / Oliver Steeples Rules completely revised with definitions, section headings and rule numbering. Rules classified by type of rule so that a set of event, arena and robot technical rules were produced.

1) Definitions

Shufflebot - A robot that uses legs operated by means of rotary motive force. For example, using the ends of servos arms directly as legs.

Armour - "a protective layer or skin". Monocoques are defined as armour.

CE - CE mark, used in Europe to determine compliance to European directives. See http://www.conformance.co.uk/CE_MARKING/ce_content.html

MPT - United Kingdom Radiocommunications Agency standards. See http://www.radio.gov.uk/publication/mpt

Clusterbot- A robot, which consists of two or more parts.

Botlets - The smaller parts that make up a complete Clusterbot.

Remote control - Control without direct physical contact of the robot body.

2) Technical Rules - Robot
a. Robots motivated by rotary motion are limited to 0.15kg (150g)
b. Robots motivated by non-rotary motion (i.e. walkers, shuffle-bots) are limited to 0.225kg (225g)
c. A robot must be capable of being contained within a 4” (101.6mm) cube prior to competition, from which it may be placed directly into the arena without any modifications being made to it.
d. Robots may expand, but only under remote control.
e. Aerials must be contained within the cube.
f. Batteries must not contain liquid acid or electrolyte.
g. No voltage greater than 24.0V is permitted.
h. A power switch or removeable link must be fitted, easily accessible and provide full shutdown.
i. Metal weapons are permitted.
j. The following weapon types are not permitted:

- Fluid based weapons (treacle guns, etc..)
- Glue or sticky pad weapons
- String or entanglement weapons
- Flame based weapons
- The use of electricity as a weapon
- Explosives based weapons
- Rotating weapons which may shatter; however scalpel blades are permitted

k. Any system involving the use of pressurised gas shall be limited to 100p.s.i (7 Bar)
l. For safety purposes all weaponry must be able to be shutdown without physical intervention.
m. Un-tethered weapons are not permitted: should a weapon break off in a competitor it will be considered un-tethered. Any tethered weapon must have an adequate connection to prevent the weapon becoming un-tethered.
n . Tethered weapons range is to be no more than 3’ (914mm)
o. Composite armour is allowed.
p. Maximum thickness of metal armour is 1mm or 0.040" or 18 gauge (+/- 5% tolerance)
q. Metal maybe bent but the whole robot may not be constructed out of one continuous piece of metal. Two pieces welded together are regarded as a single piece.

s. The following radio frequencies are acceptable: 27 MHz, 40 MHz, 418 MHz, 433-434 MHz, 868 MHz and 2.45 GHz
t. Magnetic/inductive systems are not permitted. (Due to possibility of interference with later arena designs).
u. When the control transmitter is switched off, out-of-range or subject to interference the robot must cease all motion.
v. All controls must be CE and MPT compliant.
w. All parts of a clusterbot must enter the arena as one and then split to begin battle.
x. The total weight of all botlets together in a rolling Clusterbot must not exceed 0.15kg (150g).
y. The total weight of all botlets together in a non-rotary powered Clusterbot must not exceed 0.225kg (225g).

3) Technical Rules - Arena
a. The arena will be a raised platform 30" (762mm) square.
b. At least 50% of the arena must have a drop off area.

4) Rules of Combat
a. All battles MUST take place in a fully enclosed arena, regardless of weapons being used in the battle.

b . The maximum length of any battle will be 180 seconds (3 minutes).

c. A robot that falls off the arena has lost.
d. A robot unable to right itself after 10 seconds will have lost. A judge will call cease when a robot is suspected to be immobilised. That robot will then have ten seconds to right itself and regain control. If not, it will have lost and the match continue with it still in place but not under control.
e. At any time in a fight a robot may surrender, if so they will have lost.
f. Robots may hold or pin each other for a maximum of 20 seconds. The judge will give a verbal warning at 15 seconds into any holding or pinning, for the contestants to disengage. Should they not do so within 20 seconds the battle will be stopped and the robots returned to their respective corners. The battle will recommence immediately.
g. Outside manipulation is not permitted during the contest.

h. A Clusterbot will have lost when more than 50% (by weight) of it has been eliminated.
i. A Clusterbot must be able to change frequencies within 5 minutes for the entire robot.

5) Competition Guidelines

a. Robots will be weighed by scales accurate to at least +/- 1g.
b. The weight limit is judged as the 'fighting weight' entering the arena.

c. Contestants must register the possible frequencies that their controllers' use (including which crystals they have) with 'FREQUENCY CONTROL' at least 7 days before the contest.
d. Contestants must obey 'FREQUENCY CONTROL' at all times. Any contestant not obeying 'FREQUENCY CONTROL' may be disqualified.

e. All entrants are advised to provide & wear their own approved safety goggles throughout any battle.
f. Protective gloves must be worn when handling robots with sharp edges.
g. All sharp edges must have protective covers outside the arena. All protective covers are to be coloured red and made clearly visible.
h. Contests must communicate in a socially acceptable way.
j. Sponsors allowed providing logo is not bigger than the robot.
k. Sponsors logos must be of decent taste.
l. All robots must be clearly labelled with their name. A Clusterbot must display its name on all parts. Robots without clear identification may be refused entry into the tournament.
m. There shall be 3 judges identified before each battle.
n. All judges shall be neutral.
o. All judges shall have equal vote.
p. If a contestant has an objection to one of the judges he shall make it clear before the match begins. It will then be down to the AWS committee to decide if the complaint is valid.
